I conceptualized and designed public service announcements styleframes for the issue of animal cruelty.
Sleeping in feces, injected with salt water, kicked and mutilated are some of the treats non-companion animals get to experience on a daily basis. The line between a “pet” and an “animal” is fairly thin, yet one side gets all the benefits while the other suffers.
When the ASPCA sends an agent to the home of a Brooklyn family to arrest one of its members for allegedly killing a hamster, something is wrong. That “something” is this: we protect “companion animals” while largely ignoring the torture that chickens, cows, and pigs involuntarily experience. If I kept a pig as a pet, I would have to treat it humanely, whereas if I kept it for food purposes, I can abuse and torture it however I please.
This is simply not right.
